Studying Medicine in US

1) If you plan for coming to US without M.B.B.S, your highest education is a High School Diploma and you need to start from a Bachelor Degree (4 Years).

Timeline:
- Get Bachelor Degree (4 Years)
- Take Medical College Admission Test, MCAT (7 hrs exam) (Exam Fees - 315$)
- Apply for Medical School with your GPA and MCAT score
- Start Medical School (4 years)
- Take USMLE during Medical School
- Apply for residency (3-6 years, depending on specialties)

Note:
1. You can be any major to get a bachelor degree unless you fulfill all the pre-required courses that your desired medical school asks for.
2. You need to get high GPA and MCAT Score (Mean GPA - 3.73/4.00 , Mean MCAT - 511/528)

2) If you plans for coming to US with M.B.B.S, you will need and prepare for

- Medical school graduation
- Passing USMLE step exams
- ECFMG certification
- USCE, research, volunteering
- ERAS application and interviews
- NRMP ranking and Match day
- Residency

USMLE Steps

- Step 1 (resources below)
- Step 2 CK (resources below)
- Step 2 CS (Canceled) - now OET is required for IMGs
- Step 3 (After ECFMG certification, before or during residency) (resources below)
- Computer based examinations
- Administered at Pro-metric centers (Only in US for Step 3) 975$ for step 1 and 2, 895$ for step 3 + other - application fees

USMLE Overview

- “United States Medical Licensing Exam”
- Three-Step examination required for medical licensure in the US
- Assess if the examinee has the knowledge and ability provide safe and effective patient care
- Taken by both AMGs and IMGs
- Usually 2-3 weeks to get results
- If passed, not allowed to retake
- Total allowed attempts will be reduced from 6 to 4 around July 2021
- Be mindful of yearly content changes and annual score delays

2) Mercy hospital St. louis has externship on merit and credentials. Its free.( Internal Medicine - Filled till December 2013. They accept applications on October 1st for January to May. Need Social Security and scores above 220, one month only). www.mercygme.ne t. Applicable only if you have US Social security number.
